Full Body Composition Analysis: Multi-Frequency Bioelectrical Impedance

Segmental body composition analysis provides an objective assessment of structural physique, hydration compartmentalization, and cellular integrity. AZM Performance Lab utilizes the Charder MA801 Multi-Frequency Bioelectrical Impedance Analyzer, an advanced clinical analyzer that evaluates tissue properties using five discrete electrical frequencies: 5 kHz, 20 kHz, 50 kHz, 100 kHz, and 250 kHz.

The underlying biophysics leverages alternating current impedance through bodily tissues: low frequencies cannot penetrate cellular membranes and pass exclusively through extracellular fluid, while high frequencies permeate the lipid bilayer to evaluate intracellular fluid. By applying eight tactile contact electrodes across the hands and feet, the Charder MA801 isolates electrical resistance (R) and reactance (Xc) across five distinct anatomical segments: the right arm, left arm, trunk, right leg, and left leg. This yields results with a >95% correlation to hospital-grade Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA).

Key Diagnostic Metrics

  • Segmental Lean & Adipose Distribution: Maps muscle mass and fat distribution across each limb and the trunk, identifying unilateral strength imbalances, post-injury atrophy, or structural asymmetries.
  • Visceral Fat Area (VFA): Measures deep visceral adipose tissue at the L4–L5 lumbar cross-section in square centimeters, quantifying visceral fat associated with cardiovascular and metabolic risks.
  • Edema Index (ECW/TBW): Calculates the ratio of Extracellular Water to Total Body Water, identifying systemic inflammation, overtraining fluid retention, or cellular dehydration.
  • Phase Angle (PhA at 50 kHz): Evaluates cell membrane integrity and cellular capacitance. Higher phase angles reflect healthy cell structures and functional vitality, while lower values correlate with cellular fatigue or systemic catabolism.
  • Bioelectrical Impedance Vector Analysis (BIVA): Plots impedance vectors against population reference ellipses, providing an objective snapshot of total tissue hydration and nutritional status independent of predictive body weight equations.

The assessment requires less than 50 seconds of non-invasive, barefoot standing on the diagnostic platform, making it a quick and valuable assessment for athletic tracking and clinical wellness.
